Rules of the 50th Badalona International Open Tournament The tournament is open to all players holding a FIDE federation license. It will be played using the nine-round Swiss-Dutch system with the Swiss Manager software. This tournament is part of the 22nd Catalan International Chess Open Circuit 2026, organized by the Catalan Chess Federation (FcdE). The complete circuit regulations can be found on the website http://escacscircuit.cat Two groups will be formed: • Group A: o valid for FIDE, FEDA and FcdE elo and by international standards with a minimum elo of 1950 FIDE elo (lists of August 1, 2026). o The organization reserves the right to grant invitation cards to players with lower Elo ratings (minimum 1850). Players registered with FIDE as Spanish must have an active FEDA license. • Group B: o Valid for FIDE, FEDA, and FcdE ratings. Open to all players with a maximum FIDE rating of 1949 (FIDE rating lists as of August 1, 2026). Players registered with FIDE as Spanish must hold an active FEDA license. Nine rounds will be played over nine consecutive days, from Sunday, August 2nd to Monday, August 10th, 2026, inclusive. The venue will be the La Salut Civic Center, Avenida Marqués de Sant Mori, 180, Badalona, which is accessible to people with reduced mobility, as are the restrooms. The playing areas will be climate-controlled and/or air-conditioned. The playing sessions will start at 5:00 p.m. for both groups (except for the last day, round 9 which will be at 4:30 p.m., the time control will be for both groups 90 minutes to finish plus 30 seconds increment per move made). Registration fees will be • GROUP A General registration fee 55€ Under 18s and Over 65s 50€ Players with a disability recognized by the FCdE 50€ Player of the Cor de Marina Chess Club 30€ • GROUP B General registration fee 50€ Under 18s and Over 65s 45€ Players with a disability recognized by the FCdE 45€ Player of the Cor de Marina Chess Club 30€ There will be a €5 discount if the registration fee is paid into the account of: CAIXABANK: IBAN: ES86 2100 0186 5302 0047 6141 before Friday, July 31 (inclusive), indicating the full name and surname.. All participants in the 50th Anniversary of the Badalona International Tournament will receive a commemorative tournament t-shirt. Registrations can be made until Saturday 01/08/2026 until 22 hours, at which time registration will close at the latest. Please include your name, surname, club, FIDE rating (Elo), and FIDE code. The tournament has a maximum capacity of 300 players across both groups, unless otherwise decided by the organizers. The organizers reserve the right to refuse admission or cancel registrations. Unexcused absence from any round will result in immediate withdrawal from the tournament without refund. Players' requested byes will be penalized with 0 points, with a maximum of two allowed, provided the arbiters are notified during the pre-round sessions. A third bye will result in withdrawal from the tournament. To establish the final standings, ties in points will be resolved using the following tiebreakers, drawing lots for the first two tiebreakers.: • 1. Bucholz Total (BH) • 2. Bucholz Medio (BH-M1) • • If the tie persists, the following will be applied in this order:: • 3. Tournament Performance (TPR) • 4. Number of wins (WIN) • 5. Direct encounter (DE). If the tie persists, a draw will be held. A Competition Committee will be formed, consisting of the Tournament Director, a member of the organization, and 3 players selected during the 1st round of play.. Referee decisions may be appealed in writing to this Committee before the end of the daily playing session, upon payment of a €100 deposit, which will be forfeited if the appeal is unsuccessful. Its decisions will be final and cannot be appealed. FcdE complaint forms will be available to players. All prizes will be paid after deducting applicable withholding taxes. Prizes are not shared or accumulated among those tied on points. A player cannot receive both an overall prize and a prize from a specific stage. If a player is eligible for two incompatible prizes, the tournament organizers will award the prize of greater monetary value. If the prizes are of equal monetary value, the tournament organizers will assign the prize. The FIDE Elo rating will be used to determine the prize amounts for each stage, for both Group A and Group B. The time limit for declaring a game lost due to non-appearance will be one hour from the official start time of the corresponding round The first 8 boards of group A and the first two of group B will be streamed online. The awards ceremony will be held at the La Salut Civic Center once the last round is finished. Participants, or their legal guardians in the case of minors, authorize the organization to record and/or photograph them for informational and/or promotional purposes related to this and future tournaments. They also authorize the publication of their personal data in any media the organization deems necessary for the dissemination and promotion of the event.. Smoking is prohibited in the playing area, including electronic cigarettes, analogues and/or substitutes; as well as the use of mobile phones or any electronic communication device, whether passively or actively, with FIDE regulations applying in this regard. In the event that the competition has to be stopped or cancelled due to health reasons or force majeure, the tournament will be considered finished and all prizes will be valid, including the Elo rating at the time of completion. The final tournament standings will be determined accordingly. The Organization will refund the proportional part of the entry fees in the same proportion as the unplayed portion of the tournament, and all prizes will also be reduced proportionally.. Any point not covered in these rules will be resolved by applying the regulations of FIDE, FEDA, FCE and the Catalan International Open Circuit 2026. Participation in the tournament implies acceptance of these rules. The tournament director will be Mr. Manuel Triquell Sánchez, and he will be accompanied by Mr. Pedro López and Mr. José María Carrasco as assistant tournament directors.
