Esztergom was the capital of Hungary during the Árpád period. In the royal palace of Esztergom, chess was already played in the 13th century. Jolán (Yolanda) of the House of Árpád was familiar with the game, who got married to Boleslaw the Pious in Greater Poland. Jolán of the House of Árpád, daughter of King Béla IV was beatified in 1827 and now rests in Gniezno, the sister city of Esztergom.
